There are "second shooter" theories running around based on acoustic signature analysis of the gunshots.

Maybe this kid was sent in as sacrificial "bait" to be killed on the spot thus ending the investigation while the real (second) shooter got away.

Sounds far-fetched, I know, but some solid people are conjecturing this.

Yeah, second shooter, I’ve heard. But I also have to wonder if that was an artifact of a bullet whizzing past the stage microphone before the muzzle blast was heard (speed of sound and all.)
