The book was a #1 New York Times best seller.

The movie was both criticized and acclaimed.

The actress portraying the grandma, Glenn Close, was nominated BOTH for an Academy Award and a Razzie for Best Supporting Actress / Worst Supporting Actress. One of those love / hate things.

Glenn Close holds the record, I think, for most nominations without winning an Academy Award (8).

As developed in the book and the movie, J.D. Vance is an up-from-nothing story. But, while an exceptional person, like him, can overcome a lot to achieve success, his story also opens our eyes to the problems besetting many people today, more so than in the past, and how difficult it is today to rise up.

Family break-up, drug and alcohol abuse, mental health issues, job loss, loss of medical coverage, problems with the law and homelessness, these things are tearing our country apart.

We need to make our country great again so average people can again achieve happiness and success. We need a vibrant economy and we need revival.

And, J.D., he needs to remember where he came from.

You’re kidding right? I didn’t see Apollo 13, but I know Ron is a democrat. This movie, being adapted from a book written by a republican and now a major political figure, I figured Ron’s leftist politics would more than likely end up on the screen dissing J D Vance somehow.

Maybe I’m wrong about this one and I hope I am.

Outstanding movie. Lots of swearing but it is a true life story.

The book is great. Megyn Kelly was showing scenes from it yesterday. Wife and I will watch it soon.

The book was mandatory reading for my 19 year old when he was a senior. He freaked out after he realized who our new VP is going to be. I ordered the book and we’ll watch the movie this weekend on Netflix. Ron Howard directed it. Glenn Close is in it.

Bullshiite. Your comment reflects some kind of ugly bias against Vance...and your comment is not accurate.

The book (which I am about halfway through) and the movie are regarded by most people familiar with one or the other as excellent accounts of how a boy with a gritty childhood (unstable family, hillbilly background, drug-addicted mother) grew up to become a Yale Law grad, a U.S. Senator, and now a V.P. candidate.

BTW, the book isn't about events but is a child's very honest account of his life (as perceived by him). It's his story told from his POV. That's not the kind of thing someone else can dispute (even if they really hate the person telling the story).

Baloney. The book is excellent and the movie is good but not as good as the book, which is often the case.

That's why JD's sister's story is so important. She and her husband didn't find an elite track pathway out. They got married, worked hard, stayed married, had children and prospered in a very middle class, small town way. People like them are the backbone of every American community, and their example is a refutation of the victimhood cult.

I didn’t even know about movie, until someone on FoxNews mentioned it. Opie directed it? Sounds like a good movie.

Book and movie are good unless you are similar to Vance’s bio. He seems to think he rose above his circumstances and finds it alarming that he was so exceptional in doing so.

That said, the stuff he says comes under the category of “that’s true but I can’t believe he said it”.

I almost exactly mirror him. Right down to the grandmother from Breathitt. He is not exceptional and many of us believe we are successful and exceptionally well educated because our people are Appalachian.

And if your from SW Ohio we say “Briars” not “Hillbillies”. He probably didn’t want to explain that.

Yes, leftists have been hating on it. But in the message board threads I saw, others with personal knowledge of the events and people strongly stood up for it. And really, it is showing us things that most of us in flyover country have been seeing all around us if our eyes are open.

Thank you for that thorough description.

Now, I’m going to read the book. I don’t have Netflix.
