I’m having a problem understanding something. I get it that he used his Dad’s rifle. What I’m having trouble with is, HOW does a 20 year old get his hands on all of the other stuff- remote detonators? I suppose a smart kid could figure out how to make one, but it seems odd that he should have the stuff he had. A 20 year old buying rifle ammo? Maybe in that state it’s legal. Not in Illinois…

It appears to all be improvised. The “transmitter” is a garage door opener. Garage door opener transmitter/receivers are a common component in IEDs, including those in Iraq and Afghanistan. I’ll bet there are plenty of instructions online showing how to use them.
