It dropped a little and is now at the $36 handle.

There’s no liquid options market in most stocks, especially middle market and lower case. Market markers may sell short to fill an order, but have no way to hedge that exposure. Practically speaking, they must carry a long position if they’re going to be active market makers.

There are countless funds and ETFs covering every sector and index you can think of that they can invest in. No need for them to hold company stocks while they’re in office IMO. At the very least, owning stocks gives the impression of a possible conflict of interest.
There is still a 10.3% short interest in DJT stock, as I write this.
That means there’s been a lot of trading on the short side for quite a while. (I don’t know what the short interest was in the two weeks before the assassination attempt, so I can’t tell how unusual the referenced trades were.)
My first thought was that the FBI/CIA farmed it out to MI6 to try to put a little distance between themselves and their act. It’s what they did to get Crossfire Hurricane going. The problem this time for them is the fact we’ve seen their moves before.
