> Mainstream news this morning, while showing the blowouts, showed some aircraft tires that were underinflated, about 1/2 flat.<
Fun fact:
When there are two tires on one axle, the bulging tire is NOT the under inflated one. It is carrying all of the load therefore the bulging. The under inflated one is carrying no load hence no bulging.

Jim Faulkner, a spokesperson for Frontier Airlines, told CN Traveler in an interview that the front tires of a landing gear system can typically take 219 landings on average. At the same time, the main wheels behind are suitable for almost double the landings

According to Tire Recappers, you would need about 22 gallons of oil to make the synthetic rubber components of a new large tire. By retreading, carriers use only one-third of the oil per tire,

Some airlines don’t even own the tires that keep aircraft off the ground. JetBlue, and Southwest, to name a couple, have contracts with tire companies like Goodyear that allow for usage, retreading, and return. The third-party company, in turn, certifies tires to be suitable for a certain amount of takeoffs and landings per tire.
