Angry mob of 'anti-tourism' protesters use water pistols to drench foreign visitors at restaurants in Barcelona - as thousands march on Catalan capital and call for tourists to 'go home'

Thousands of protestors marched through central Barcelona this evening, waving placards and squirting holidaymakers with water guns in the latest expression of anger at perceived overtourism in Spain.

Under the slogan 'Enough! Let's put limits on tourism', some 2,800 people - according to police - marched along a waterfront district of Barcelona to demand a new economic model that would reduce the millions of tourists that visit every year.

Protesters carried signs reading 'Barcelona is not for sale,' and, 'Tourists go home,' before some used water guns on tourists eating outdoors at restaurants in popular tourist hotspots. Chants of 'Tourists out of our neighbourhood' rang out as some stopped in front of the entrances to hotels.

Years ago in Norfolk, Virginia the locals wanted sailors gone. So the navy paid everyone in cash with 2 dollar bills. Opened the locals eyes to the economic impact should the navy move out. People in Barcelona should be careful what they ask for. Tourist dollars probably account for a significant percent of their economy. Unemployment is harsh.

That was my first thought. I don’t think we could do that today. The mechanism to handle the logistics don’t esist.

I can understand their frustration. They might even have a reasonable case to make about placing limits on some things....but going after tourists is not cool. They haven’t done anything wrong.

The tourist crowds this year are insane. There are more tourists now than there have ever been. And its not August yet.

We live in one of the least “touristy” bits of Spain, and even here its noticable. The thing is that though tourism is extremely important, most of the economy is not about tourism. But some of the industry externalities affect everyone, such as public transport, traffic, rents, food prices, etc.

My advice is to go in the off-season. April is a good bet, as the weather is likely to be good (sometimes not, this year it was really quite cold), and the tourist swarms are at a reasonable level.

I can understand their feelings because living in Florida, I have wished the “snowbirds” go home. We love to go RVing and during the cool months when camping is at it’s best in Florida, you’re lucky to get a spot in the State Parks. But, we know tourism’s the biggest revenue for the state, so we live with it. I wouldn’t trade living in Florida for any other state period!

Who? The US rate of tourism per capita is tiny. And only in a few places like CA and FL is it even noticable.

Are they being PC when they use the word “tourist”?
Or, maybe it’s something else?

Very few Spanish people come to the USA for any reason. Or have ever come. They certainly weren’t crowding into Ellis island.

Tourism can be both good, or bad. When an area gets overloaded and overwhelmed, it can be a real drain on the locals, on the other hand, the locals would probably be much poorer. So what’s the solution? Maybe limit the amount of “guests” or expand, it’s really up to the residents.

Oh Right. Tens of millions of Spanish speaking thugs stream across our border and what are they? “South Americans”? Funny how they speak a Latin derived language oddly named after their parent country.

What the hell would you know about it. The cities I was born and grew up in are overrun now with the detritus of the decrepit Spanish Empire. They babble about the coming “Latino Century” as they rip apart the American nation.

Give me a break foreigner. They didn’t come through Ellis Island because they have a land border to invade. Or perhaps you’ve been comatose for the last 30 years and especially the last three as massive columns of Leetle Brown Invaders march on our country in division strength.
