Maine is located about 1,500 miles south of the Arctic Circle

The closest part of Australia to Antarctica is from the Southernmost point of Tasmania to the Antarctic coast (that's the Antarctic Circle) which is 2288 kms away 1421.697 miles.

It does get cold in the dead of winter in either hemisphere.

In parts of southern Africa it’s common for nighttime temperatures to dip to 30F in July.
