We Talked To Experts About Why You Hate Mayonnaise So Much
Bustle ^ | 2/20/24 | Lucia Peters

There’s no shortage of divisive foods in the world, but for many people, there seems to be a special kind of derision reserved especially for one particular condiment: Mayo. Some people really hate mayonnaise. And it isn’t just always just simple dislike; among the anti-mayo crowd, there’s a contingent who are vehemently opposed to the stuff. Feelings can run so strongly that it might lead you to wonder exactly why so many people hate mayonnaise so much — but perhaps not unexpectedly, there isn’t just one explanation for the strength of feeling so many share about mayo. It might come down to any number of possibilities, according to several experts with whom Bustle recently spoke — but together, these possibilities paint a compelling larger picture about what fuels our likes and dislikes when it comes to our gastronomic experiences.

If you make your own, it’s your best olive oil, egg, fresh lemon juice, and a dash of salt. Scrumptious!

I can’t eat mayonnaise, but I think it is related to a lifelong violent abhorrence of onions.

Too many things with onions also had mayonnaise...

My mother used to try to make me eat mashed potatoes with raw chopped onion in it.

I used to eat mayonnaise sandwiches all the time.

The kindergarten I went to, way back in the day, grew lettuce—and gave us fresh lettuce and mayonnaise sandwiches. Tasted so good!

My mother used to try to make me eat mashed potatoes with raw chopped onion in it.

That's criminal! Otherwise, based on her product, she was a very good mom.

I know I'm weird, I can't stand mayo.

Mayo is the BEST!
Miracle Whip-YARGH!

It’s just too sweet!
It’s okay to make ham salad sandwiches.
But it tastes REALLY strange in tuna salad, or chicken salad.

When I visited the mid-west (hubby hails from Nebraska)
I ordered a chicken salad sub, and it was made with Miracle Whip, and had relish in it!
Disgusting!

It’s handy to make coleslaw dressing, or thousand Island dressing, but that’s it!

With quality beef franks, I cook them, split them down the middle, and put Velveeta cheese in them. Then I begin prepping my buns.

Butter on sandwiches is British, whereas mayo is more common across the Channel. Mustard is occasionally used with butter, which is hardly ever done stateside.
