It was originally built for the Spanish-American War but was not finished before the war ended. It never saw any wars. After WWII military had no more use for it and sold it to Pinellas County which designated it a recreational area and opened it to the public. It actually has more visitors than the Everglades or Keys with over 2.7 million.

It is rated as having one of the best beaches in the country. As a kid I camped there a couple of times, before it became known as a go to place. The Fort’s four 12-inch M1890 mortars and two 6-inch Armstrong guns at Fort De Soto are the only weapons of their type remaining in the United States. Besides camping and beaches it has numerous trails one can walk, piers and shallow water for fishing, boat ramp, a ferry to Egmont Key, canoe trails and picnic areas.
