Starting a decade and a half ago, I noticed companies having a harder time filling such key roles as CEO. I'm convinced that, like many jobs, it's a position where the person who has the ability to do the job also has options to do other, less aggravating things. CEOs are not paid well for the job they do, they're paid well to keep their mouth shut - forever.
Historically, it likely worsened when korporations took over companies from private owners and high-level positions, especially C-suite positions, became ruthlessly mercenary. Decades ago a CEO was one who worked their way up the ranks.
