He was probably a better person than Ruth.

New York had three of the best center fielders of the day to play at the same time, Mays, Mantle, and Snider._p>Baseball used to be fun. Many factors but the main one is probably "moneyball" (great movie by the way)

Baseball was THE Sport when Mays played.

I believe it was Durocher who said, after Willie’s first HR (which ended his rookie slump): “I’ve never seen a ——ing ball get out of a ——ing park so ——ing fast in my ——ing life!!”

I am so blessed to have seen him play. Wrigley Field, 1964.
He is all-time top 5 in my book. Loved his balanced batting stance. If more guys these days would adopt it, they’d hit 25 points higher w/o sacrificing power.

My baseball hero as a child growing up in the 50’s. I always played center field and made basket catches to copy him. RIP Willie!

He served in the Korean War missing most of the 52 season and all of 53. The next year he was discharged and he rejoined the NY Giants. 1954 was his year. MVP and World Series Champion. This was his Topps baseball card for 1954.
