Its so obvious. We used to be a serious country. We had actual adults in charge of our institutions. I didn't agree with some of them but there were professional standards that were actually followed, there were codes of ethics, there was - overwhelmingly - a sense of intellectual honesty.
Even when I didn't agree, you would often hear someone in charge saying "I don't like it/agree with it BUT the evidence shows......." or "I thought X would happen BUT when I looked at it I had to admit......" or "I don't agree at all with what he's saying here but it is far more important that we respect the right to free speech - and at the end of the day I believe sunshine is the best disinfectant so let him speak and let us speak and I'm confident we will win the public over."
How often do you see that now? Almost never. Now they almost without exception, all act like insecure 3rd graders. "MY TRIBE!" It doesn't matter what the facts or the evidence shows. "MY TRIBE!" They will sit there and lie through their teeth....KNOWING YOU KNOW FULL WELL THAT THEY ARE LYING and yet they will still sit there and lie. Its exactly as Solzhenitsyn described it. Professional standards? Out the window! Ethics? Gone!
Must get confirmation from 2 independent sources? Forget about it. Just run with the "story" right now so long as it makes our political opponents look bad. Don't like another lawyers client? Disbar the lawyer! Doesn't matter if he hasn't done anything remotely unethical or illegal. Don't like the politics of the accused? Just abuse the crap out of your position of power as a prosecutor or judge and railroad him. Doesn't matter if that's never been prosecuted before and doesn't matter if lots of people on your side have done it over and over again and you gave them a complete free pass. "MY TRIBE!"
In addition to being infuriating and dangerous to witness this level of political corruption, its also just so embarrassing as an American. We used to be a serious country. It wasn't that long ago. I remember it.
