What are called “Great” Russians are but the country as a whole is an East Slavic ethnic group indigenous to Eastern Europe, with a common Russian ancestry/culture & history.
There are also: Tatars,Chechens,Bashkirs,Chuvashs, and Ukrainians to name the top 5 ethnic populations, aside from Russians- of the 26 separate oblasts and republics-most of which are definitely not white.

Ethnicity, race, and color are three different things. Most Russians are Caucasoid, Mongoloid, or a mixture. Ethnicities are, as you mentioned, all over the place. Color is really pointless - most 'brown' people are actually 'white'. Some Caucasoids can get pretty dark, while some Mongoloids (or even Negroids) can be just as pale as a 'white' guy. And of course, that's not even getting into the fourth column, which is what 'Russian' would fall under: Nationalities.
