The war started in Europe in 1939. US entered this war in December 1941. The battle started around 1936 in Spain as Germany and Russia tested their weapons of war for their future needs/plans. People from other countries took part as well. Hemingway wrote about his experiences in Spain. President Kennedy’s brother was killed helping Britain before Dec. 1941.

On August 12 1944, Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. was killed when his plane, packed with explosives for a top-secret bombing raid, exploded over southeast England.

A VERY informative book about the Spanish Civil War is Mine Were of Trouble by Peter Kemp. Debunks a lot of the BS put out by the Communists, (and Hemingway). Kemp fought with Nationalists until he was too wounded to continue.
