Best new things for computers-
-NVME drives. Everything moves faster.
-Windows 11
-Browsers like Edge and Chromes keep improving, and same for the extensions you add. I use 5-6 extensions.

I use Firefox which I like. With adguard, it allows viewing without being plastered with ads. My main os is Linux, but I do dual boot into windows 10 (soon to be 11) too though.

One thing I noticed is that in windows os, the fans always seem to be running pretty hard at times, well, not always, but often, while in Linux they hardly ever do.

I’m not one os over another, but just find thst Linux is all I really need for online stuff, while windows I need for things like photoshop, rebelle painting program, photography etc. The dual boot is a decent solution for me, but I need to dual boot from separate hard drives instead of from one, as backing up dual boot with 2 different os’s is very hard- something always seems to go wrong. I usually have to restore windows only, then Linux backup, then I have to use “bootfix” to reinstall grub boot menu again. Although, cloning the HD with a disk duplicator device does work perfectly though.

The primary advantage that you have when building your own desktop is that you can tailor it to your own specific needs and/or wants. Typically, however it is difficult to actually save much if any money.

I once put together a dozen identical desktops with Windows XP for friends and family who were constantly hounding me for computer support. Everything was the same including the assortment of software. I also purchased some extra parts which came in very helpful.

This experiment was very successful... when someone called on the phone with a problem, I would fire up the extra computer that I kept for support and use it for reference as they described the issue that they were having while I typically used “Windows Remote Assistance” to see the problem for myself... Of course, many problems at that time were solved by just having them turn the computer off and then back on again. And many others were just problems where people were trying to do something that they were not familiar with.

This was in the days before “high speed internet” was available so Remote Assistance ran much clunkier than when I help someone with the “Quick Assist App” introduced with Windows 10. Despite the pace of improvements to computers over time I still managed to keep these computers going for years. I still have a couple of them in storage.

I did quite a bit of research when shopping for components and was able to get some good deals, but these computers were still not as inexpensive as some of the name brand computers available at the time. But they had features and capabilities that most name brand computers did not at that time. And even back then manufacturers were hobbling the bios and loading down their machines with tons of crapware.

I have been very happy with the “gaming” laptop that I purchased. It is amazing how quickly a decent GPU can render 4k video even in a laptop as long as you have a cooling pad underneath it. I was pretty happy with the laptop that I have been using for years, but I don’t bother with it for video projects or anything very processor intensive these days.

The new laptop that I purchased is Intel and NVIDEA based but I feel that Ryzen based computers have been a far better value for the last several years. I purchased my wife an 8th generation Ryzen 7 based Dell laptop recently at Costco. It was marked down $250 to $550. It has impressive performance for a “budget” laptop without a separate GPU. The Radeon 700M integrated GPU is vastly superior the integrated GPUs on Intel processors. Her previous laptop has an inexpensive discrete GPU but the new Ryzen 7 laptop easily outperforms it in every way. It actually plays Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 without any problem with medium settings.

I tend to open multiple browsers and leave a lot of tabs open as well depending on what I am doing. But I start closing them when the tabs get so small that you can’t read the headings. It is helpful for cross referencing but tends to make things confusing when you go to far with things.

I think that it is great that you have put together a new computer that better fits your needs. I do think that it is worth the trouble most of the time. I also enjoy tinkering. My current interest is trending toward the home server realm which also an area where starting with a good platform can be helpful... So, I am not sure exactly which way I will go with it.

Yup, I love to work on computers too, when things go well, or can be solved with not too much trouble. I need a project to keep my mind working out- parts should be here by Friday hopefully. Looking forward to getting it all together.

I started out in the early 90’s with dialup lol- what painful days those were! I even gamed online with it but folks complained that I was cheating because my character would freeze, then all of a sudden fly across the screen to a new spot. They didn’t realize that dialup lag was the reason lol. We had to move to finally get cable internet- what a huge blessing that was! On dialup, if I wanted to download a game over say 500 mb, I had to do,so,overnight with the phone tied up. Now a 500 mb file is done before I click the download button lol.

Yeah I’ve always been an Intel person- and back in the day amd wasn’t so great for gaming so I avoided it- i almost bought one once, but the reviews scared me off it- nowadays though they have made a lot of,progress.

I also remember well the days of dial up although it I may have I started using modems at an earlier time. This was a time before the internet and even email using Compu-serve, AOL and bulletin boards. I used to have two phone lines with one dedicated for modem use. But to get faster speeds I had modems that could use both lines at the same time. My neighbor and I buried a cat5 cable that allowed us to play Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator together when it came out. I purchased some new toys myself recently. I bought a used controller for my drone with a built-in screen which has a USB-C based video out port. It allows me to plug in a pair of AR (Augmented Reality) glasses that I also acquired recently. It literally is like having my eyes in the sky.

The glasses worked so well that I purchased an almost 5-year-old Samsung S20+ phone that the glasses also work with. Despite its age the phone looks new. When you plug the glasses into the phone it basically goes into a Chromebook like mode which looks like a standard Desktop. I installed the Android versions of Word and Excel and use a Bluetooth mouse and small keyboard with, although the screen of the phone is used as a capable touch pad in this mode. The glasses have speakers built in, but I prefer to use a Bluetooth headset for a more immersive experience.

This mode also works great for watching videos or web browsing. I was using it in the car yesterday after dropping my wife and her sister off at the mall. I have a full-blown VR headset but the nice thing about the glasses is that they use far less power, and you can actually still see some of the outside world in the periphery. The VR headset has cameras to bring in the outside world, but they are very noticeable to others, while the glasses look sun glasses.

nice lookin shades lol=- stylin while flyin- i haven’t looked too much into VR- but want to once i get the new comp up and running- i did have a sort of vr for my auto racing games- where i could look around to the side to see cars to the side of me- it worked ok- but a little slow- couldn’t move too fast- it used the webcam to track which way i would look- it wasn’t full blown vr like oculus or anythiong- can be used or flying too-

here’s a site talkin about it-

https://www.flightsim.com/forums/topic/44956-aitrack-and-opentrack-use-your-webcam-for-head-tracking/

(I think i mighta showed this software to you in a thread awhile back? maybe it was someone else-)

The AR glasses have a program that works with Windows that does provide head tracking type functionality which would be helpful except that it is on the shaky side. This is the same issue that plagues the Meta Quest 2 headset when using it with flight simulators if you don’t use the optimal setup.
