RIP Jerry West

He went to East Bank High School in East Bank WV. Once a year they would hold a sign that said "East Bank is now West Bank"

My father was from WV and l remember him talking about how great he was. I think he was the first basketball player l can remember and l was born in the early 50’s.

As a teenager and big hoops fan, saw him play in college and followed him throughout his playing career in college and the pros. One of the greatest players ever in the game, IMO.

RIP Mr. West.

West was one of the greatest basketball players who ever lived. Man, he could shoot the living daylights out of the ball.

There’s a sign along the West Virginia Turnpike just south of Charleston that say Chelyan birthplace of Jerry West. I exited once and looked for the home, but it was long gone.

My dad’s side is from Eastern Ky so I suppose that’s why he/they always had a big interest in him. He was very good.

Coach Martin had us put West’s approach to fundamental bball into practice. No BS, solid tactics and that alone made us a much better team in our region. The resulting cohesiveness was amazing. And that was 50+ years ago.

West was a great player, but in my opinion his career was overshadowed by the success of Wilt chamberlain, Bill Russell and Lew Alcindor (before he became Kareem Abdul-Jabbar). West is better-known by younger fans as a outstanding team executive, though.
