The NBC requirement through neglect has devolved to the following definition, which clearly has no basis in law, but because of the thing you just said being the most common sentiment, the definition is completely resistant to being strengthened (rendered appropriately exclusive):

Natural Born Citizen of the United States (by the way, for this weak definition you can thank Mark Levin for his foolish support of Cubamerinadian Ted Cruz for the Pubbie Party’s 2020 nominee for POTUS):

Anyone born anywhere in the known universe to any parents whatsoever OTHER THAN born overseas to two non-U.S. citizen parents.

And even that exclusionary ending phrase is under pressure these days.
