Dang, I first saw this film - maybe a 16mm print (?) - in the 11th grade film studies class. I’m sure I’ve seen it since but this would be nice to view on a large screen.

On HBO (now Max) I recently watched Rashoman and High and Low. All great movies by a master.

For those who don’t know The Magnificent Seven was based on this Kurosawa film, The Seven Samurai.

The Kurosawa movie “Hidden Fortress” inspired George Lucas to write the original Star Wars script. The droids C3PO and R2D2 are based on the main characters of “Hidden Fortress”. “Princess Yuki’s journey mirrors Leia’s, while Rokurota inspired Kenobi, and the Galactic Empire crest resembles the Yamana clan.” Very entertaining movie.

I especially liked seeing the great Toshiro Mifune portraying the plucky comic relief.   He was the ultimate leading man in Rashomon (1950), The Hidden Fortress (1958) and Yojimbo and many other films.   When he portrayed Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto in the movie Midway, they dubbed his voice with Paul Frees, which was a crime against humanity.   They made him sound like the talking rings in the Time Machine.
