“Seniors should be exempt from property taxes.”

I can see homeowners transferring property to their retired parents to get around paying property tax.

Simply make a requirement that the property ca not be acquired from a younger near relative and must be held a certain time before eligible for exemption.

Which is why it will never happen (seniors being exempted from property tax).

Sadly, people continue to vote for more taxes pretty much everytime it comes up on the ballot. We are at the point now where 50% of one's income goes to taxes of one sort or another and there seems no end to it.

In my town, the budget referendums are always held outside the normal election times, such as April or even August. Most citizens don't even realize there is a budget referendum coming up. However, all those who work for the town and state government does know, as they speak to one another, and they show up at these special elections en masse to make sure they get jammed through.

These referendums always seems to be tied to the schools or some other vital service like police and fire. In other words, if you dare vote against our tax increase, your house might burn down as we won't be able to pay firefighters on duty or needy school children might not be able to get hot school lunches or whatnot. All because of YOUR greed in not wanting to give up just a little more of your income to taxes.

As bad as things are taxwise in my parts, the people around here continue to vote for more of them.
