In response to your thought about the diminished number of sources for news being used on FR…..

I think some of the biggest reasons are the copyright infringement restrictions that were placed on FR as well as many of the major news sources are now behind a paywall.

In the old days, the entire piece was posted to FR and could be dissected in full. (That also made FR a great research tool in that it remained on FR’s server and could be referred to months and even years late whereas links to excerpted articles may or not be available when wanted in the future)

Now, for the most part, posters are limited to just an excerpt of the article and rather than pulling out the pertinent details from the article in their excerpt, they cut_n_paste the first 3-4 lines of the article, regardless of whether or not it contains any important details. The reader then has to make a choice as to whether or not to click on the link to the excerpted piece to see it in full.

…but then again, there is that long standing FR tradition about posting before reading the article.

Those turds allow it lest they become TOTALLY irrelevant.
