There are still those who just can’t understand that in order to get the government these people demand, they have to win elections. To do that they have to sell and convince the overwhelming population that their way of doing things is going to be great. Or else do like Joe Biden does. Cheat.
Unfortunately, staunch conservatives have never really been able to do that.
And nobody can tell me either Bush was a conservative.
Orthogonal to it - pretty similar to Reagan supporting those willing to stand against the Soviet Union.
Better example would be Reagan's efforts to cut domestic handouts, while the other guy blasted Senate Republicans for refusing to support his December 2020 push for another round of $2000 check handouts.
