Apparently, he had been playing pick-up basketball, and took a vicious elbow that caved in his frontal sinuses.
The way the Centers back in the day played, Lambeer, Parish, Jabbar, they all threw their elbows around pretty fiercely when they were going for rebounds, and I was alway astonished that so few people took an elbow to the face. I guess if you play long enough to get to that level, you learn how to keep your face out of the way.
