Had a brother-in-law whose standard vacation was to backpack Isle Royale or similar destination. He encountered many a problematic moose. The problem he explained years ago is hiking trails in the woods and animal trails are often the same and within dense woodland where you or the moose hardly have room to step off the trail. Hence, the moose charges to get right-of-way.

He said you always have to be ready to instantly behind a nearby large tree as fast as you can and then circle it as needed instead of running away through thin growth.
