I would add, in an age of swords and spears and arrows, of course armor worked and was indeed essential. Even a leather jerkin was better than nothing.

The hostiles encountered by Cortez and described by Bernal Diaz wore cotton armor. Whatever’s handy, plentiful, and can be made to work got used. :^)
