I don’t know much of the details but I imagine he took a small transaction fee. At that time bitcoin was of very low value relative to the dollar compared to what it is worth today. It may be worth billions now. Perhaps billions of dollars in transactions took place but I don’t think he personally made billions. I could be wrong.

Apparently he had had his accumulated Bitcoin stolen, and after his arrest the Feds found and seized it.
