Have you interacted with Claude.ai or ChatGPT-4o yet?
My experience has been that you quickly get over the notion that AI cannot think (it ceases to matter).
I have had long conversations with it (about the Bible, art, mathematics, psychology, etc.) and, even if it doesn't think (per se), you quickly realize that it is smarter than humans.
Most people who have concluded that AI can't think are not basing that conclusion on personal experience. I have had several friends lecture me on AI but when asked if they had actually used it, the answer was always an opinionated, resounding "no."
We assume, for ourselves, that we are capable of original thought. But the most creative things we have done have always been variations of existing work.
Lord of the Rings is a re-working of the Catholic faith into secular symbolism, mixed in with Norse myths and political commentary on socialism.
Very well done, inspired even. But it was not original in the sense that Tolkien made it out of nothing.
When I talk to Claude, for some reason, I am polite like it is a person.
Claude often refuses to answer and explains why my question is wrongthink. For example, if I ask what percentage of crime is committed by blacks.
I just tried Claude yesterday. What a joke. Maybe the challenge is that I’m asking questions where I’m expecting substantive answers, instead of asking it to do something for me?
