"Seems like moose are not predators and only attack when they feel threatened."

Several years ago while hiking in the foothills of the Cascades, I stumbled
across a fully mature bull elk with a few cow elks and calves lounging about.

Not more than twenty feet away, I thought I was a goner, but the bull and
cows didn't bother getting up, hardly even glancing at me.

I had a similar experience several years ago hiking in Albion Basin (above Snowbird). We encountered three bull moose browsing in a meadow which our trail passed through. We quietly maneuvered to some large nearby boulders and climbed on top. We peacefully observed these moose for about 20 minutes, with them approaching to as close as six feet to us. They weren’t too impressed by us, but they sure impressed us. It was awesome.

I was hiking a trail in the Tetons alone as the sun kept getting lower in the sky. Going up a set of switch backs. A bull moose was also going up the hill - straight up the hill.

I decided that with the sun going down (I was backpacking, and wanted to get off the steep hill to camp for the night) I couldn’t just wait him out, so I timed things so that when he was near the center of the trail I would be at one of the switch backs away from him. We did that dance for quite awhile. I had read that a moose was one of the more dangerous animals at times.
