LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested by Louisville Metro Police on Friday morning after trying to drive into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club, the site of this week's PGA Championship.
Traffic outside the golf course had been stopped after a man was struck and killed by a shuttle bus around 5 a.m. ET.
Scheffler faces charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. Scheffler was released at 8:40 a.m. ET and headed to Valhalla. The assault charge is a felony; the others are misdemeanors.
Scheffler's attorney said it would be up to Scheffler whether he plays today in the second round.
According to ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, who witnessed the incident, Scheffler was trying to drive around the crash scene on a median. A police officer instructed Scheffler to stop, but Scheffler continued to drive about 10 to 20 yards toward the entrance.
At one point, an officer attached himself to the side of Scheffler's car. Scheffler stopped his car as he turned into the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club.
After about 20 to 30 seconds, Scheffler rolled down his window to talk to the officer. The officer grabbed Scheffler's arm to pull him out of the vehicle, according to Darlington. The officer reached inside the vehicle to open the door, and once Scheffler was pulled out, he was pushed against the car and placed in handcuffs.
Darlington was standing at the entrance when Scheffler was detained. Darlington said Scheffler turned to him and asked, "Can you help?"
According to Darlington, an officer instructed him to back away.
SNAFU....Cops attempting to do investigation of fatal vehicle accident. Scottie went past cones set up, so he could get to course. Cop try to stop him by attaching himself to car. Drives about 10 ft. Scottie opens window, cops pull him out of car and throw him against car. Scottie can’t figure out what is going on and asks guy(turns out to be reporter) for help. Cop tells reporter to back up. He is going to jail and there is nothing you can do about it.
And he’s teeing it up in 8 minutes... I’d call that ‘focused’. Odds are, he’ll now win the tournament and kick everybody’s *ss just to prove that he’s the best.
Good cops are gold. Some think they are Deputy Dawg.
For all the cop knew, the driver could be lying or intending some form of mischief or simply be putting others in danger. The thing to do is obey the officer and then try to explain the circumstances.
Cops may be wrong but must still be obeyed when public order and safety are at stake.
Over zealous cop. Over zealous citizen
It speaks more to the degradation of character in the country than anything. Character determines your behavior when not under supervision. Most people fail nowadays since the national culture has been unmoored from it's founding, Christian-centric moral compass. And that's the left - the left-hand path.
HUGE ovation as he walks to the tee. Despite the over zealous cop jumping on his car in vain to stop what could have been a world tragedy, a car getting into a golf outing without his permission.
Yep, lots of Hamas terrorists with bomb vests breaking the line to go golf.
He looks like an asshole. Men with beards are usually rebellious rascals up to no good.
Who'd he run over, exactly?
Look, the guy may be a self entitled "don't you know who I am?" jerk who thought he was more important than everyone else at the moment, and frankly I despise people like that. There's no need to exaggerate with the "run people over" comment.
Let people's actions speak for themselves.
LOL, Christian not afraid to speak about his faith. Those who know him describe him as an “old soul”. He’s a good guy. Already issue statement that was pretty good.
Scottie is known as one of the highest quality of character golfers to ever play on the PGA tour,, a great representative of the Christian faith.. I’d put a ton of money on this being a total misunderstanding on his part about what was going on in that accident area..
Maybe he thought he was being waved ahead to go around (in the pouring rain chaos) and didn’t know who was trying to stop him. When the total story comes out put yourself in his shoes and decide then on how he should be seen in this situation.
You comment like the medium is some holy thing that must worshipped. I suspect that traffic was at a standstill and, in an official car, he went over the median slowly to get around the blockage. Hardly what I would consider a drunk driver.
So, how long have you been sporting a beard exactly? 🤔
Scheffler must have got his license at the Tiger Woods driving school?.
Exactly right, he was told to drive around. Then some lunatic Superman jumps on the car and startles him, no cop would do that to prevent a car from getting into a golf tourney, they would have simply written down the tag number. Then the cop rips him out of the car, slams him into the car and throws cuffs on him. Cop was more jacked up than Biden at the SOTU.
Both individuals were wrong in their actions.
That’s a “push,”
Two apologies.
Case closed.
> You comment like the medium is some holy thing that must worshipped. <
A median is not some holy thing that must be worshipped. But neither is an official PGA car.
If I had to bet, I’d bet that Scheffler thought he was doing the right thing. No malice. And the cop, although overzealous, thought he was doing the right thing too.
The best outcome here would be for the DA to drop all felony charges against Scheffler. Charge him with some summary offense. Scheffler pays the fine, and life goes on.
That would be my expectation.
