“Electric drivetrains are around 80% efficient converting electrons to motion.
Gasoline drivetrains are around 20% efficient converting gasoline to motion.”
Pure BS. You’re comparing apples with potatoes. You’re including the energy generator in the ICE “drive train”. If you look at only the drive train past the engine the efficiencies are not that different.
To do a fair efficiency comparison you have to include the efficiency of the coal fired electric generator to charge the batteries, the transmission losses, the charging and discharging losses, etc.
If you do that, the ICE is actually more efficient.
Our electricy in the USA comes from Coal, Gas, combined (coal+gas) and nuclear.
The industry has about a 45% efficiency.
As a reminder, gasoline (ICE) is 20% efficient and that’s NOT counting the energy to drill, pump, refined, and transport it to the pump. So we are looking at probably 15% max efficiency, versus a 45% efficient source, combined with a 80% efficient motive.
But WHO CARES?
I want 0-60 in 2.9 seconds! I can get it with electric for < 100K. In ICE it costs 1M$
I argued with luddites here who said electric cars were golf carts.
Yeah, well, the golf cart just passed your Lamborghini. Except the golf cart has 4 doors and you have to pour yourself into a Lambo.
To do a fair efficiency comparison you have to include the efficiency of the coal fired electric generator to charge the batteries, the transmission losses, the charging and discharging losses, etc.
and there it is...
