It’s really too bad he decided to break up the best band in the world in 1969.

I read somewhere that the band was known to skip the odd recording sessions so that Sly played a lot of the parts himself.

A shame that two greats -—the other was Buddy Miles-—were never able to combine incredible talent and creativity with normal life and dependability for recording commitments.

I saw the live shows of the Buddy Miles Express (an ensemble of brass and rock guitar similar to Sly) and they were mesmerizing. Had to explain to others who he was until finally Jimi Hendrix had him join the Band of Gypsies and made it easier. Miles was in prison twice and had serious kidney and heart trouble later. While he was nearly dying Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood played “Them Changes” at Carnegie Hall on their album as a tribute and Buddy listened from his bed. In prison he actually got a band together of cons who were good musicians. The famous serious of songs and TV ads for the California Raisins were the result with songs he wrote and played with that group.

Like asking Jack Kerouac to be a good conventional father to his neglected daughter Jan and a good husband at the same time as an unconventional writer, reluctant media star and symbol of rebellion from rules.
