Being a commercial building like that it was probably connected to a 20-amp outlet. However, most people use extension cords that are not really adequate.

An electric blanket would use less energy and keep one warm.Several ordinaty blankets and good sleeping bag would allow comfortable sleep.Sanitary needs could be achieved with modest sized containers to be discreetly emptied elsewhere.Being aware of public restrooms and avoiding being noticed too often as well.Heat rises so heat from main building may have made space tolerable.
Reminds me of characters in fiction who lived in the hidden spaces as they feared the “authorities” AND the criminals.

If it weren’t for a family to support, I could think of dozens of places where I could set up shop without notice. I understand how commercial spaces work and are operated. I manage over 1.2 million SF myself. I know the secret hideaways.

As I recall, the guy in “The Terminal” had passport issues.
There was a domestic fellow in LAX though — he made money by returning carts.

I worked at Logan Airport during the late 1970s. Before and after my shift, I would collect those carts in Terminal E to get the quarter deposit. These were International travelers and they were most likely somewhat wealthy and thus not worried about collecting their quarter deposit by walking the cart back to the rack. I would usually get a couple extra dollars each day and back then, that was not all that insignificant.
A couple of dollars back then would get you a full meal at McDonalds. You could also get a six-pack of Miller High Life back then for just over a couple of dollars and that was the Champagne of Beer.
