So why did they attack the USS Liberty?
The Johnson administration refused Israel's request for a naval liaison fearing it would look like we were backing Israel. So President Johnson promised the Israelis that we would keep our ships west of Cypress. The untouchable criminals in the National Security Administration ignored this and sent USS Liberty into a war zone without informing the warring parties or giving it a destroyer escort. The Israelis had no reason to think there were American ships in the area and attacked what they thought were Egyptian and Soviet ships. When Israeli torpedo boats got close to the crippled USS Liberty and saw it was American, they stopped shooting and rendered aid.

Israeli aircraft radioed in that the ship was identified as being American and were ordered to attack regardless. Both distress frequencies and tactical frequencies were jammed.
