Just my opinion but Robin Williams’ family found it more humiliating to think he went out masturbating while choking himself tied to a doorknob than some concocted story about depression and a goofy makeshift suicide.

Absolutely hit the nail on the head. I heard it on the radio the min she was known to have died and knew right away it was, as you said, “ ‘choked on a sandwich’ was just another way of saying she died from the effects of either being as high as a kite or drunk as a skunk”.
We all did.
It was unfair to her. I think she would be hurt by that. She wanted so bad to escape that image.
She was very talented with a beautiful voice and a charming wit. Shame her young daughter had to hear that tacky lie...
