Nationwide the county sheriff has absolute authority over the constitutional goings on in same. The FEDs, or local adjacent authorities can not override an order of the county sheriff or their duly assigned reps to not conduct business within their county boundaries.

I’ve seen it for local stuff, but I think historically the lure of “We’ll cut you in on the loot” has caused them to abrogate their duties to their citizens. The citizens have also neglected to give them the boot when needed.

I remember that from a SCOTUS decision. But when corrupt, they have to be voted out and in places that have dishonest elections that can be a problem.
