Former President Donald Trump came down hard on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a new interview with Time, criticizing him directly for the October 7 terrorist attack and indirectly for Israel’s presentation of its war against Hamas in the days since.
Asked if he thought it was time for Netanyahu “to go,” Trump did not come to his old ally’s defense.
“Well, I had a bad experience with Bibi. And it had to do with [Qasem] Soleimani, because as you probably know by now, he dropped out just before the attack,” replied Trump. “And I said, ‘What’s that all about?’ Because that was going to be a joint and all of a sudden, we were told that Israel was not doing it. And I was not happy about that. That was something I never forgot. And it showed me something. I would say that what happened on—the October 7 should have never happened.” “It happened on his watch,” observed the former president’s interlocutor.
“No, it happened on his watch. And I think it’s had a profound impact on him, despite everything. Because people said that shouldn’t have happened. They have the most sophisticated equipment. They had—everything was there to stop that,” said Trump. “And a lot of people knew about it, you know, thousands and thousands of people knew about it, but Israel didn’t know about it, and I think he’s being blamed for that very strongly, being blamed. And now you have the hostage situation—”
Shortly after that, Trump was asked if he thought he “could work better” with Benny Gantz, one of Netanyahu’s political rivals.
“I think Benny Gantz is good, but I’m not prepared to say that. I haven’t spoken to him about it. But you have some very good people that I’ve gotten to know in Israel that could do a good job,” said Trump. “And I will say this, Bibi Netanyahu rightfully has been criticized for what took place on October 7.”
Trump also said that “Israel has done one thing very badly: public relations.”
“I don’t think that the Israel Defense Fund or any other group should be sending out pictures every night of buildings falling down and being bombed with possibly people in those buildings every single night, which is what they do,” he added.
Netanyahu is being "strongly blamed"? By whom? Is Trump one of those critics? If not, wouldn't have been better to have said "unfairly blamed"? I think that while the 10/7 defense failure will ultimately cost Netanyahu his ruling coalition, I don't think that now, with a war going on, is the time to take shots at him.
The guard down and delayed response on 10/7 dont make Bibi look very good. Some of his other comments about the US and Americans who support Israel make him look detestable.
Trump never forgave Bibi for congratulating Biden on his “win.”
“Trump also said that “Israel has done one thing very badly: public relations.””
It doesn’t help that there is a world wide anti-Israel propaganda wing of Hamas and the “progressive” marxist world wide want Israel destroyed.
Is ‘Israel Defense Fund’ an entity or was ‘Israel Defense Forces’ intended?
It would appear so.
The Deep state was never more powerful than it ever has been during Trump’s watch, though. They did whatever they wanted and he didn’t do a thing about it.
Trump is probably right about Netanyahu. But this is certainly not the time to say it. After, you wouldn’t expect Churchill to publicly criticize FDR in the months right after Pearl Harbor.
Let Israel sort its own problems out.
Bibi’s phone call was a knife in the back and it got him nothing
“Trump also said that “Israel has done one thing very badly: public relations.”
Qatar funds Columbia School of Journalism.
Trump stated what his real reason is and I believe him. The one you stated was a secondary reason.
Netanyahu is no saint and he deserves criticism, Criticizing him is okay. You won’t go to hell for opining on him.
...and sometimes Trump makes a complete fool of himself.
Like now.
say what you like Libertards—I will still vote for Trump to be our next president.
No question Israel dropped the ball on 10/7, with its highly touted intelligence network, it is hard to believe how this happened.
Our resident RAT speaketh. You have made a fool of yourself. Trump’s opinion was solid and based on fact.
“Trump never forgave Bibi for congratulating Biden on his “win.”
Can’t blame him on that, Bibi was one of the first world leaders to come groveling to the demented old pedohile.
And the largest U.S. military base in the entire Middle East is located in Qatar.
When it comes to these matters, people who think in black-and-white terms are NGMI.
It’s risky trying to hold Netanyahu responsible. You’ll be painted anti Semitic if you try.
yeah intel in general was seriously on the wrong track w/Hamas. the CIA was caught with its pants down too. they hadn’t an inkle of a shadow of a suspicion that they could pass on. that’s on us.
