“I thought the contractor working at his home was suspected of foul play, since he was threatening him regularly.”

The other rumor was that local yobs pushed him in and wouldn’t let him out of the pool. Resentment towards the rich outsider by the locals.

But you’re trying to avoid linking LSD with these coo-coo for cocoa puff celebrities, for whatever reason. Good luck with that. Brian was an undeniably gifted musician, but it’s also undeniable all those pharmaceuticals just scrambled his noodle. I don’t believe this is a “popular” or “unpopular” opinion, it’s just self evident fact and corroborated by everyone around him. The fact that the Beach Boys was a huge operation just meant everyone wanted to dip their beak in the trough. Very sad.

At one point they were lodging lawsuits against each other.

Ever notice all those guys basically have a “get out of Jail Free” card?

About 1970, the Rolling Stones were recording in the US at a place called Muscle Shoals. Keef was enamored of the whole southern Blues thing, and wanted to actually see the South. Road Trip!

So they get pulled over, a bunch of Limey poofters in a rented Cadillac or whatever would be Classic. “Ya’ll ain’t from around heah, is ya?”

They all got arrested, though somehow - nobody knows how, Keith and his briefcase full of goodies wasn’t searched. They were held at the station, a few photographs, and go on about yer business, I guess. Don’t try this at home, kids.

I think Paul McCartney got busted with a pound of weed at Narita, Japan airport. This was after he had been caught with weed before, and told “don’t do it again”. That’s why they searched his bags in the first place.

If you look back through this poster’s history you will see some of the most controversial posts FR has ever hosted. So controversial, in fact, that this postscript exhortation has become routine.

“Brian Wilson’s episodes of psychosis apparently began in 1964 predated his LSD use. Their beginning coincided with his introduction to high-grade hashish.”

Certainly possible, but psychosis often manifests at about that age or a bit younger anyway with no drug involvement.

I’m not trying downplay the dangers of LSD. It’s not a drug I have ever used or would have any interest in using, but as a fan of the music of Brian Wilslon I am familiar enough to know that the popular narratives about the man don’t always line up with reality. When I was more of a casual listener, I certainly assumed that the narrative of Brian writing California girls, the Pet Sounds album, Good Vibrations etc before having one acid trip too many circa 1967 and scrapping the Smile album and turning into the spastic “acid casualty “ full of tics, tremors and confusion that you’d see in interviews in the 80s and 90s. And yet reality is more complicated. There’s an audio 1968 interview with Brian and it’s obvious that none of the later confusion was there at that point. https://youtu.be/a3OQ4w77l0g

He mentions the “paranoia” of previous year, but again that had been an ongoing problem for him before he had even met acid. It’s a well known side effect of high thc intake and it coincided with his hash use

Why would you have assumed that? “Good Vibrations” is a cool tune, but it is clearly an early psychodelic tune. The celebs in the mainstream music industry were “turning on” in ‘64 thru ‘66. It wasn’t yet illegal.

I won’t deny drugs (and alcohol) may tend to cause musicians to loosen up or get creative, but it is obvious drugs destroyed a whole generation of young people. The combination of practically unlimited money (for a 20 year old anyway) and Every Day a Holiday following a 3 Day Weekend proved to be more than many can handle.

Arguing whether it was the hash or the acid or the cocaine or the bath salts that finally did them in is missing the point, I think.

As I read Jones had become erratic and drugs had taken him over. He basically was forced out of the band because he could not focus. He died from drowning due to too many drugs taken. No real mystery unless you want to believe that Mick and Keith had him taken out.

Funny back in the late 90’s I had a rangom encounter with a friend of a friend’s Mom who was telling me how she once dated Brian Jones and was still friend’s with him when he died. She was absolutely convinced Mick Jagger had killed him. She went on and on about it and I was like ok I believe you.
