With regard to cold war/nuclear anxiety, don't forget this one, which was moving up the charts when the Space Shuttle exploded after takeoff in early 1986.
In fact, that was the first song I heard after that event in January of that year. I was in training for work at the time in Waltham, MA when we heard. We went to lunch at a sub shop in the area and that song was playing on the radio.
I played that album a lot when it came out.
