This was always going to happen sometime this decade regardless of the players involved. The reasons for the war are rooted in a witch's brew of national paranoia driven by Russian history, geophysical reality, and impending demographic collapse.
That merely makes a war of conquest understandable and NOT justifiable. Remember when the war started? Almost every military person, myself included, thought this would be a walkover.
When it wasn't we were given a great opportunity. It is in the national interest of all NATO members to bleed Russia white in Ukraine, thus preventing further aggression, regardless of motivation, by Russia.
I simply do not understand what I see from some on this thread. That is, the acceptance, nay applauding, of Russia's war of conquest, for that is what it is.
If anyone thinks I am wrong, please explain. What makes a war of conquest justifiable/acceptable? Should we allow Russia to control Ukraine just because we, including myself, don't like the people running Ukraine? Really? Who else should we permit to be invaded by a more powerful neighbor because of, REASONS? We are better than that.

You do not seem to grasp that Ukraine is a direct threat to Russia as the forward thrust of globalist elites who do want to conquer Russia or at least its banking system.
I have no allusions about any “Good” related to Putin or Russia. They’re just another government and are inherently bad in my book.
However, a I pointed out previously, this is another war, like Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan that the U.S. is only involved in because of the machinations of people who want all countries, including the U.S., subsumed into a One-World tyranny.

I don’t see Russia as friend or foe to the US at the moment but our internal enemies are doing such a nasty job of destroying this wonderful country. I do see China as a foe trying to buy and own us.

I disagree, and perhaps we'll just have to disagree, until we learn more, with solid proof, about NATO's and our politicians' involvement and motivations in Ukraine. I trust Russia more at this point than I trust our Democrat and RINO politicians.
Russia is not the Soviet Union of the Cold War. NATO, UN, EU, and the US politicians have continuously provoked Russia for more than two decades, partly with the expansion of NATO, and partly with the use of Ukraine as a base for money laundering, human trafficking, arms trafficking, drug trafficking, and the insidious placement of a couple dozen bio-weapons labs in the Ukraine, right on Russia's upwind doorstep.
Russia has presented several times at the UN, the proof it had gathered from the bio-labs.
Putin stated his justification and objectives at the beginning of their operations.
One objective was to capture the bio-weapons labs, and halt their production.
Their second objective was to rid the Donbas Region of the Nazi terrorists who had been fomenting a genocide against the Russian speaking people of the Donbas.
Those siding with Ukraine are also siding with the Now Dead Traitor NoName, Lindsay Graham, Myth Romney, Pelosi, Kerry, and all the (other) commie Democrats who have been raking in gazillions in kickbacks from our tax dollars being sent to Ukraine.
