When Russia seized Crimea in March, it acquired not just the Crimean landmass but also a maritime zone more than three times its size with the rights to underwater resources potentially worth trillions of dollars.
Russia portrayed the takeover as reclamation of its rightful territory, drawing no attention to the oil and gas rush that had recently been heating up in the Black Sea.
And when NATO couped Ukraine it seized control of Russia’s Black Sea Naval base.
Crimea was always part of Russia.
PS. Before the SMO (Special Military Operation), Crimea voted on whether to be part of Ukraine or Russia, and the vote was over 90% to stay with Russia.

Deks, that piece by the NYT was written in May 2014, after the CIA overthrew the Ukraine in their multi step plan to force regime change in Russia in Febrary. The NYT was already starting the justification for NATO to provoke Russia.
Saying 'follow the money' requires also saying, 'Ignore prior agreement not to invite Ukraine to join NATO and to stay out of the Crimea' It requires the disregard for border regions. It requires 'Ignore election interference in Ukraine' 'Ignore Biden's extorting of Ukraine to protect his source of money laundering', 'Ignore Biden/Schumer/Pelosi/Romney family investment in money laundering in the Ukraine.' It requires ignoring Trump's comment that the Ukraine is among the most corrupt on Earth. It requires ignoring the bio warfare labs that really are there, according to CIA maps (which describe them as 'bio labs'). It requires ignoring WHY Hunter Biden gets overpaid by Burisma. It requires detaching from all context and focusing only on oil and gas, not re the UBER corrupt energy industry (Schumer, Pelosi, Biden etc.), but limiting one's focus to just the energy aspect as it applies to reserves. If NATO takes the region, NATO gets those reserves.
As I post on the Q thread, I note that Q advised us about Ukraine, and it was not about Russia's alleged motivational thirst for oil reserves:
