Our principal had the “board of education.” Never mind the leather strop. The lettermen’s club required inductees make a wooden paddle as part of initiation, that was then given to their upper class sponsor. Occasionally the principal inherited one of those paddles which was occasionally used on miscreants. Wrist action is key. One could hear the POP clear down the hall.

Our principal had one too, and after receiving justice, you got to sign your name on it. Let me tell you that there wasn’t much room left on which to sign (ask me how I know). He was very “liberal” in applying the “board of education “. To this day I am thankful for him. VR/pat

I remember one nun had a pledge paddle with holes in it...reduces wind resistance.
