if you are investing in anything than the actual precious metals, like gold coins or bars... it is worse than the fiat currency.

The problem with gold as a private investor is that it does not bear interest and has transaction costs, carrying costs, and risks of theft. Arguably, appreciation in gold can offset the lack of interest earnings, but that assumes that one sells — which again means transaction costs.
