Erwin Chemerinsky: Dodging a Bullet

Last week controversy arose at the home of the Erwin Chemerinsky, Dean of the Berkeley Law School, at a luncheon he and his wife were hosting for senior law-school students. To become the law-school dean at one of the most leftist universities in the country requires a man who is also an extreme leftist; That man is Dean Erwin Chemerinsky. At one time he was considered as a potential candidate for the U.S. Supreme Court. That destiny, which was derailed by controversy in 2007, resulted in America dodging a bullet which would have impacted SCOTUS to this day. More on that later.

Chem, as he is popularly called, had the leftist credentials that a Democrat president would require as a fit for the Court: Harvard Law, DoJ work in the Carter administration, professor of law at DePaul, the University of Southern California, and Duke.

He is prolific in his writings, with over 200 law-review articles and eleven books to his credit. Additionally, he espouses all the ‘go to’ positions one would expect from a leftist: Favors gun control, opposes the death penalty, Roe was good law, favored gay marriage long before the Obergefell decision. He also once termed the Electoral College to be one of the "compromises concerning slavery.”

In 2007, Chem was appointed to be the Dean of Law at the then brand-new school of law at the University of California at Irvine (UCI). Much of what we now know about the man has emerged with the passing of time. But insiders, those in tune with rising stars in the upper echelons of the nation’s legal system, knew him and they knew just how far left he was. For that reason, he was a perfect candidate not only to become dean but also a potential candidate for a SCOTUS

He was one of the Hollywood Ten who were jailed in 1950 for their 1947 refusal to testify before the US Congress about their involvement with the Communist Party USA. They and many other US entertainment industry figures were subsequently blacklisted, which denied Maltz employment in the industry for many years.

Background
Albert Maltz was the third of three sons born into an affluent Jewish family,in Brooklyn, New York, Maltz was educated at Columbia University, where he was a member of Zeta Beta Tau fraternity and the class of 1930, and the Yale School of Drama.

He became a communist in 1935 out of conviction, later telling an interviewer: “I also read the Marxist classics. I still think it to be the noblest set of ideals ever penned by man ... Where else in political literature do you find thinkers saying that we were going to end all forms of human exploitation? Wage exploitation, exploitation of women by men, the exploitation of people of colour by white peoples, the exploitation of colonial countries by imperialist countries. And Marx spoke of the fact that socialism will be the kingdom of freedom, where man realizes himself in a way that humankind has never seen before. This was an inspiring body of literature to read.”

Although Maltz later learned of...... and criticized...... Soviet repression, one 2009 analysis maintains, “he remained sympathetic to the anti-fascism of both the Soviet Union and the CPUSA during the 1930s,” saying in a 1983 interview “the Communist party in the United States was leading the educational and organizational struggle.”

Heard the audio on Megan Kelly’s show where he was weakly whining in the background “get out of my house” over and over and over again - as the pro-Palestinian with her toy microphones got louder and louder.

“Chem” didn’t like it one bit, not one bit. Not in his home anyway, in yours, it would be A-OK. Maybe next time he can call his buddies in BLM for back-up, LOL.

Nearly 30 years ago, I took a course in which “Chem” was an instructor. He was a strident leftist who wasn’t shy about espousing his far left views at every opportunity. That’s the truly ironic aspect of last week’s kerfuffle. He’s all up in arms and offended that Palestine activist girl interrupts his dinner party to inappropriately inject her personal political views when he’s spent a lifetime inappropriately injecting *his* personal political views.
