It's too bad that Nixon and his people were obsessed with getting a landslide in 1972. If Muskie had been the nominee (I don't know if CREEP and the "dirty tricks" crew deserve credit for knocking him out of the race) instead of McGovern, Nixon probably still would have won convincingly but maybe carrying 47 states instead of 49 (Muskie probably would have carried his home state of Maine along with Rhode Island).

Maybe Nixon could have handled the crisis in South Vietnam in March and April 1975 better than Ford did. At least the country would have been spared a year and a half of obsessing over Nixon's misdeeds (which seem petty compared to later Democrat Presidents and what we have since learned about a few earlier Democrat Presidents).
