Seems also as if that “exception” when examined carefully presents a false dichotomy in all but the rarest of cases.
In those rarest of cases doctors should never act on their own judgment to trade the mother’s life for that of the not-yet-born child. But some would-be mothers of such children are heroic and, though it is terrible to think about this, are sometimes willing to suffer anything, even death if it comes to that, to preserve those children’s lives if possible. If they are of sound mind (excluding duress), and express this clearly to the doctor, what should the doctor do?
