I met my first Gypsy last week. I'm still kicking myself for somewhat falling for his phony sob story, but I was exhausted from prolonged lack of sleep, and it was not much money. His entire family was in his car, trying to participate in the scam.

I expect Gypsies to be picking pockets in France, not conning Americans in a Walmart parking lot.

St Petersburg FL has a recurring infestation of Irish Travelers, most of whom are named Williamson. Every two or three years the news paper has a headline warning the citizenry that “The Terrible Williamsons are coming.” In the ̃sixties In Jacksonville, at least (I’ve not been back there since then), there would follow many blacktopping your parking lot, or reconditioning your roof scams and many others. The roofs and lots were then spread with used motor oil and for a few minutes they looked good. In Jacksonville Gypsies would come to your door begging or just making conversation while one or two would quietly force open your back door and steal stuff. My MIL encountered just that and lost the sterling table set. Mostly they are casually pagan and their moral system reflects that.
