best example of billboard memes were the burma shave billboards on rt 66 back before interstate 40 across the southwest.
My dad was in the army. we drove back and forth between bases on the east coast and west coast in the 1950’s-60’s. those burma shave mile markers came up regularly.
I never shaved with burma shave but the bill boards were memorable.
Some series of those signs still exist along what’s left of historic Rt. 66 in States like Oklahoma and northern Arizona. When we retraced it back in 2017 we encountered several foreign tourists doing the same thing. No airport/airline descents into Travel Hell, and well worth the time spent.
