I grew up in that area, but haven’t been back for a while. I remember Fairview Heights as being a nicer area. It had the usual sprawl of development around the mall, but it was never unsafe. East St.Louis has been pretty much destroyed, and the pathologies that did that have been infecting surrounding towns.

I was born in Belleville while my dad was stationed at Scott AFB in the early 50s. By 6 months of age, I saw the writing on the wall and got out of that town!

Actually, my Dad was transferred to Alabama. 🤣

Fairview Heights has ~30% black population as of the last census. That’s up from 17% in the 2000 census.
