It is a shame that the US planners didn't know it at the time but at the conclusion of the Marianas Campaign we could have snapped up Iwo Jima and Okinawa very easily as they were virtually undefended. It would have made the Philippines Campaign much easier as a large part of the IJN was in the Dutch East Indies at the time.
