The IJN messed up at Midway because they had an overelaborate plan. They had their fleet scattered all around the north Pacific when they could have defeated all comers as a unified armada.

Like most Jap plans Midway was over-complicated, but they easily had what they needed @ Midway to win. Their fear of the American carriers and the fact they thought they outnumbered the US 2-1 in that category caused them to make critical mistakes. The three Jap carriers sunk in short order was partly due to some of the terrible aircraft that the US had at the outbreak of war. Had it not been for the dogged determination of the outclassed Devastator torpedo bombers to press their attack and suffer close to annihilation for their effort, the US would have lost that battle.

The Japanese lost the war the moment the first bomb fell on Pearl Harbor. After that happened the only things remained to be determined were how long it would take and how many people on both sides died. The three most important things to winning a war are logistics, Logistics, and LOGISTICS. The outcome was NEVER in doubt.

The historical record was there for them to see. The primary cause the US got into wars was naval.
1. Barbary Pirates - They were taking our merchants and enslaving our citizens. The US Navy was founded on Anti-Piracy.
2. War of 1812 - British stopping US ships and pressing US sailors.
3. Spanish American War - USS Maine blowing up in Havana harbor.
4. World War One - German unrestricted submarine warfare killing Americans in our and other's ships.

The Japanese learned the first rule of Naval Warfare the hard way. As they would later warn the world, "Don't touch the American's boats."
