The incident was much more likely to be poor maintenance than a deliberate act.

I saw reports that the ship lost all power a few days prior to the incident while still moored at the wharf. Something about too many refrigeration containers tripping the main power breakers, IIRC.

So I guess now we know why there was that big gout of black smoke that came out of the ship just before it hit the bridge. They were starting the emergency backup diesel engine to get emergency power to the steering gear pump motors.

I read somewhere that the ship was not really the Dali. It was said that this was one of the 13 EVERGREEN ships, and that it had the name “Dali” painted on it to disguise it for some reason. And in fact it may actually be the Evergreen ship that ran aground in the Suez Canal a while back. And that in both cases, clandestine sex trafficking was/is involved. ???

It looked like the emergency diesel generator was unable to handle the load after the main diesel generator failed/tripped. So the casualty that stopped the main generator also stopped the emergency gen, or the switchboards were improperly aligned, or maybe both. Once power was lost to the electrical motors that run the hydraulic rams was lost, that rudder wasn’t moving.

USN ships have a bit more redundancy in power (automatic bus transfers, multiple generators online, automatic load shedding) and steering controls, as well as the crew to man aft steering for transits like this. My sailors (Interior Communications Electricians) actually manned aft steering, and we performed extensive pre-underway checks to ensure everything was properly configured, aligned and tested. We had specific configurations for these transits and other “restricted maneuvering” situations, ensuring maximum redundancy.

That’s a very hectic five or six minute’s for the pilot in charge. Don’t know whether it was the harbor or the bay pilot in charge.
